Real Time Clock modification for 2D3 nixie clock

The original 2D3 PCB did not include a real time clock chip and has to be modified to include one. The DS1307 RTC replaces IC3, the EEPROM in the lower right corner of the main board.

To fit the battery holder some cuts need to be made in the foil on the top surface of the board, and some of the solder mask needs to be removed.

1:
Foil cuts

Isolate a 10mm x 10 mm square of foil. I found that a round or triangular needle file is good for this. Hold the board up to the light to check that the foil is cut all the way round. Scrape the solder mask off in the three areas shown to reveal the copper foil and tin with your soldering iron. Check that the isolated square of foil really is isolated using a multimeter.

2:
Solder the battery holder

Solder the battery holder.

3:
Fit the RTC chipCut the pins short

Bend pins 1,2 and 3 of the DS1307 RTC chip as shown. Insert the remaining five pins into the board and solder. Crop the pins as shown.

4:
Solder the crystal to pins 1 and 2

Crop the crystal wires to about 8mm and solder to pins 1 and 2.

5:
Bend the crystal over the top of the chipConnect the battery holder

Bend the crystal over the top of the chip. Connect pin 3 to the battery holder with Keynar wire. Don't fit the battery until you have completed the rest of the clock.
